Once Keurig's most feature-rich brewer, the K79 Platinum Plus brews 4-12 oz coffees with a huge 72 oz reservoir and Temp Control. Now discontinued, take a look at the K-Elite. It offers everything on the K79 and a bunch more.

Keurig K79 Overview

The K70 Platinum Plus series featured Keurig's top-of-the-line home brewers until the Keurig 2.0 brewing system came out.

These brewers expanded your brew size options from 4-12 oz, giving them the largest K-Cup size available to this point, and their 72 oz reservoir meant refilling less often.

While revolutionary at the time, today those features are fairly standard. And these K70 brewers don't even have Strength Control, which was added later on.

K70 Platinum Plus brewers can be tough to find these days, but you may come across 4 different models: K70, K71, K75, K77, and K79. What's the difference?

  • The K70, K75, and K77 are the exact same brewer with different model numbers denoting different included accessories, like K-Cup variety packs, water filter starter kits, and descaling solution.
  • The K79 is a different brewer with everything the other K70s have plus Hot Water and Rinse buttons.

All of these K70 series brewers have been discontinued, so we'll recommend a few in-production alternatives that give you an even better brewing experience.

Pros
  • No pod-scanning technology so brews both licensed and unlicensed K-Cup pods
  • Foolproof to use
  • Very large 72 oz water reservoir
  • Rinse and Hot Water buttons
  • Comes with K-Cup variety back, water filter starter kit, and My K-Cup
Cons
  • Discontinued model
  • Hard to find
  • No Strength Control

Is the Keurig K79 for you?

Are Keurig K79 for you?

The Keurig K79 Platinum Plus is an impressive, feature-rich K-Cup brewer...if the year is 2014.

In all seriousness, the K79 isn't a bad brewer, and none of its options or features have been discontinued or are no longer supported. If you can find one at a good price, I can think of worse brewers to buy.

But I'd rather stick to something currently in production with Keurig's latest and greatest brewing system.

For that, the K-Elite is your best bet. It shares the same 4-12 oz brewing sizes, large water reservoir (75 oz), Temp Control, and Hot Water mode, but the K-Elite adds several improvements:

  • Strength Control
  • High Altitude setting
  • Iced beverage mode
  • A sleek, durable, brushed metal exterior
  • Quicker brew speeds

Unfortunately, it doesn't have any type of LCD display, but is that worth buying a brewer that's 6 years old?

Not to us.

Keurig K3000SE

Keurig K3000SE
Overall Rating: 85
Keurig's original, fully self-service commercial machine, the K3000SE is a direct water line brewer with an intuitive LCD touch screen and auto-eject pod functionality. However, we recommend the new-and-improved K3500.

Keurig K-Slim

Keurig K-Slim
Overall Rating: 86
Keurig's largest compact brewer, the 4.8" K-Slim keeps the narrow width of the K-Mini and K-Mini Plus but offers a relatively massive 46 oz water reservoir and a removable drip tray accommodating mugs up to 7" tall.

Keurig Vue V700

Keurig Vue V700
Overall Rating: 81
A revolutionary series from Keurig, the K-Vue introduced K-Vue pods for bigger, hotter coffees. Today, all Vue brewers are discontinued. For a versatile brewer with all the extras, check out the K-Elite.

Bryan De Luca

I'm Bryan but most people know me as The Coffee Maven. I grew up outside Boston, Massachusetts and received my Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Providence College. My first introduction to coffee was during my college days, when I used it as a source of caffeine to fuel late-night study sessions, but soon I became obsessed with the chemistry of coffee. How did changes to water temperature or contact time affect its taste? Why do beans from Africa taste fruity while beans from Indonesia taste spicy? I launched The Coffee Maven in February 2017 to explore these questions and help others brew their perfect cup. Welcome to my site, and thanks for reading!
