3 Tips When Buying A Jura Espresso Machine

  1. Set your price range. Normally, we don't recommend making price the primary decision when purchasing a new coffee machine, because, usually, there are plenty of options in every price range. That isn't exactly the case with Jura, whose espresso machines are more expensive than those from Breville, Philips, Krups, Saeco, and other well-known brands. The Jura A1 (priced comfortably under $1,000) fits the budget of most shoppers looking for a fully-automatic machine. At the high end, some Jura espresso machines (like the Jura Z6) cost over $4,000. How much are you willing to invest in your daily caffeine routine?
  2. How important is reservoir and bean hopper volume? Jura's coffee machines come in three sizes: compact (36.8 oz water tank, 4.4 oz bean hopper), mid-sized (63.6 oz, 9.9 oz), and Giga (87 oz, 19.8 oz). You can save a good chunk of change by choosing one of the compact models, including the feature-rich Jura ENA 8. Or, for a similar price to the ENA 8, you can opt for a mid-sized model with fewer brew features — the Jura E8. Of course, there's always the premium models that combine convenient water and bean hopper volumes with awesome functionality.
  3. Do you like to customize your own beverages? The Jura E8, Z8, and Giga 6 have advanced programmability to let you create and save custom beverages with the E8 also featuring Smart Mode, which allows you to reorder the drinks on the display panel. If your favorite drink doesn't come standard on most Jura machines, give these models a long look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Jura's espresso machines are the definition of "premium" with myriad advanced features, many of which are industry-firsts.

If you're stuck deciphering all of the acronyms and sales-speak can be frustrating — what the heck is "P.E.P."?! — then this section is for you.

In fact, let's start with P.E.P.

Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.)

Debuting in 2016 on the Jura E8, P.E.P. is Jura's proprietary extraction process that forces water through coffee grounds in short, pulsed intervals to allow for sufficient contact time and, thus, optimal extraction.

Pre-infusion and contact time are difficult for most fully-automatic coffee machines to get right, but Jura's P.E.P. nails it with most shots taking 24-25 seconds to extract. That's right in the target range for a true, flavorful espresso.

AromaG3 Grinder

If you're shopping for the best grind and brew coffee maker or the best super-automatic espresso machine, there's one under-the-hood feature that's difficult to quantify: the grinder.

There are two common coffee adages that you've probably heard ad nauseum:

  • Freshly ground coffee is infinitely better than pre-ground coffee.
  • Your grinder is more important than your coffee machine.

There's truth to both. A fully-automatic coffee machine ensures you're brewing with freshly ground coffee, but how do you know whether the machine's grinder is up to snuff?

That's why it's important to buy an all-in-one machine from a trusted brand like Jura. You know what you're getting: quality.

And though many Jura coffee machines are expensive, the Swiss brand does offer their AromaG3 grinder on entry-level models like the Jura A1.

The AromaG3 grinder is one of Jura's latest improvements in their line of super-automatic machines (though not the latest improvement — see the Product Recognizing Grinder below) and it has a significant impact on the quality of your resulting coffee.

Product Recognizing Grinder (P.R.G.)

Jura's newer premium machines, like the Z10, feature an upgraded grinder system called the Product Recognizing Grinder. The P.R.G. is the secret sauce that makes the Z10 so incredible. With the push of a single button, the Z10 can brew 30 different coffee drinks (plus two hot water modes) with barista-level quality.

That's impressive for any machine, but it's especially impressive for a fully-automatic espresso machine that puts one-touch convenience above all else. Jura's P.R.G. takes whichever coffee drink you select and intelligently customizes the grind fineness and quantity for a perfectly dosed portion. Combined with Jura's other advanced brew features (like P.E.P.) the result is a perfectly extracted shot time after time.

About The Coffee Maven

Bryan De Luca

I'm Bryan but most people know me as The Coffee Maven. I grew up outside Boston, Massachusetts and received my Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Providence College. My first introduction to coffee was during my college days, when I used it as a source of caffeine to fuel late-night study sessions, but soon I became obsessed with the chemistry of coffee. How did changes to water temperature or contact time affect its taste? Why do beans from Africa taste fruity while beans from Indonesia taste spicy? I launched The Coffee Maven in February 2017 to explore these questions and help others brew their perfect cup. Welcome to my site, and thanks for reading!
